What do I Need to know about my email to get started?- Can You Verify that your Email Address Actually Exists ?
are you sure ? do you have some materials or access to the configuration ? - Do you know your USERNAME and PASSWORD ?
this can be very different from one system to another... example:
UserName Password
myname mypass
name+website.com mypass
name@website.com mypass
- Do you know if you are using IMAP or POP ?
IMAP - This allows you to control mail that is stored on another computer.
You can move & delete messages from your computer, while retaining the copy on your server.
POP - This is the most common, and simply pulls your email from your server onto your computer.
Once the mail is downloaded, it is no longer available on your server.
Most service providers will give you an option. IMAP can be helpful, but can often lead to
a "Mailbox Full" error if you have a limited amount of space.
- Do you know your Incoming & Outgoing Mail Servers ?
you should know both the ADDRESS & PORT # for connecting... examples only!!
Incoming: mail.mywebsite.com ~ port 110 or 995 for POP, port 143 or 993 for IMAP
Outgoing: smtp.mywebsite.com ~ port 25 - Do you know if your Incoming or Outgoing Servers requires Special Authentication ?
